What are Complete dentures ?

Complete dentures are the removable prosthesis which is used when all the teeth are lost from the jaw and need to be replaced. It is basically a tissue supported denture which is given to people who have an adequate amount of ridge and soft tissue in their mouth.

How complete dentures are supported in your mouth ?

Complete dentures are supported in your mouth on the basis of various tooth forces which help in stabilising the dentures properly . Since these dentures are seated on the oral mucosa and tissues which are under constant action of the oral muscles. The principal of a well seated complete dentures involves that the retentive force acting on the dentures should be more than the displacing force.thus the stability and retention involves the biggest part in construction of a complete denture.

So, in what conditions do we give complete denture ?

Complete dentures are given in patients who are completely edentulous or people with poor prognosis of the left teeth in their oral cavity , like if generalised recession is present, grade lll mobility is seen or grossly carious teeth is present then it is advisable to remove such teeth, after that if they become completely edentulous then complete denture fabrication is done in such cases.

Moreover the status of the ridge and soft tissue structure or the supporting bone is also examined , if there is adequate bone height and the ridge is not resorted then only a complete denture can be fabricated.

What is the procedure of a complete denture fabrication ?

Primarily patient assessment is done and the status of the ridge, bone and soft tissue is monitored which is followed by taking an impression of the oral cavity. Primary and secondary impressions of the ridge , surrounding soft tissues are taken with biocompatible impression materials . Casts are made on that and patients are recalled after a few days for taking detailed impressions of the sulcus I.e the borders of the impression which helps in stability and retention of the dentures. The centric relation and centric occlusion of prosthesis are seen and adjusted ,rims are made , teeth are arranged and the patient is called for try in. After trial and rechecking in patient, it is sent for final fabrication and then delivered to the patient.
